<image:title>Lab Members - Deb Roy (Graduate Student, Biophysics)</image:title>
<image:caption>Deb graduated from University of Kansas in 2021 with a B.A. in Human Biology. She moved to Davis and joined the Biophysics graduate program soon after, and joined the Silverman lab in the summer of 2025. Deb’s research focuses on understanding how gene dosage imbalances within the 15q11–q13 chromosomal region — including but not limited to UBE3A, the maternally expressed gene classically linked to Angelman syndrome — disrupt neuronal excitability and network function. Using primary mouse cortical neurons and patient-derived iPSC models, she aims to define how these molecular changes drive hyperexcitability phenotypes observed across neurodevelopmental disorders. Her work bridges multiple translational gaps: from in vitro cell systems to in vivo mouse models, and from preclinical discovery to human relevance — embodying a bench-to-bedside approach to understanding and eventually correcting these disorders. He is currently a Neuroscience graduate student in the combined MD/PhD program at UC Davis School of Medicine and joined the Silverman lab in the summer of 2025. He is hoping to integrate his research background in learning and memory and systems neuroscience to tackle genetic neurodevelopmental disorders and develop better translational biomarkers for neuropsychiatric disorders. There her research utilized EEG paired with touchscreen technology to characterize attention and reward learning in a prenatal alcohol exposure model. Now at UC Davis, she plans to integrate her experience with EEG to study seizures, circadian cycle, Evoked Potentials, and associated brain activity with various neurodevelopment disorders. Sarah is most excited to be a part of a translational research lab with the hope of making a positive impact on patients’ lives.
